What matters in a family floor
Family life is hard on floors: dropped toys, food spills, muddy shoes, pets and constant footfall. The priorities are scratch and dent resistance, easy cleaning, water resistance for spills, and a forgiving look that hides everyday marks between cleans. Value matters too, since a floor that lasts longer costs less over time.
The toughest family flooring options
LVT is the family favourite. Its thick wear layer resists scratches and dents, it wipes clean, copes with spills and feels warm and quiet underfoot. Realistic wood and stone looks hide marks well.
Laminate offers a very hard, scratch-resistant surface at a lower price. An AC4 or AC5 rating signals heavy-duty durability suited to busy households, though it is less forgiving of standing water.
Tile is almost indestructible and fully waterproof, ideal for kitchens and hallways. The hard surface is less child-friendly for falls, but underfloor heating and rugs soften it.
Engineered wood brings durability with natural warmth, and a tougher grade or a good lacquer helps it withstand family wear. It can be refreshed over time rather than replaced.
Room by room
Use LVT or tile in kitchens and hallways where spills and traffic concentrate. LVT, laminate or engineered wood suit living and dining rooms. For bedrooms and playrooms, a soft carpet still has a place for warmth and comfort, accepting it will wear faster.

LVT is the most well-rounded family floor: tough, warm, water-resistant and easy to clean. Choose laminate to save money, or tile where you need maximum durability and waterproofing.
