What is lvt flooring?

LVT, or luxury vinyl tile, is a premium form of vinyl built in rigid planks or tiles with a thick wear layer and a high-definition printed design. It convincingly mimics wood and stone while staying water-resistant, warm and quieter than the materials it imitates.

Key features

  • Highly realistic wood and stone designs with embossed texture.
  • Thick wear layer for strong scratch and dent resistance.
  • Water-resistant build suits kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Click or glue-down formats to suit different subfloors.
  • Warmer and quieter underfoot than tile or laminate.

Where lvt works best

LVT is a true all-rounder. It works in kitchens, hallways, living rooms and bathrooms, and is a favourite for open-plan spaces where one floor flows through several areas. Glue-down LVT suits underfloor heating particularly well.

Caring for lvt

Sweep and damp-mop regularly. LVT resists most stains, but wipe spills promptly and avoid dragging heavy furniture. The wear layer protects the design, so day-to-day care is minimal.

What lvt costs

LVT typically costs £25–£60/m² for the tiles, with fitting from £12–£25/m² depending on the laying pattern. Herringbone and other patterns cost more to fit. See our LVT cost guide for detail.

FAQ

Common questions

LVT is more water-resistant, warmer and quieter than laminate, and usually more durable, but it costs more. Laminate can feel harder underfoot and is less forgiving of standing water.

Yes. Most LVT is compatible with underfloor heating, and glue-down LVT in particular conducts heat well. Always check the maximum surface temperature in the product guidance.

Most rigid LVT is water-resistant and handles spills and damp rooms well. For a fully water-tight bathroom floor, sheet vinyl or properly sealed LVT joints are best.
