What matters in a bathroom floor
A bathroom floor must cope with splashes, steam and the occasional overflow, and stay safe to walk on when wet. Waterproofing comes first, slip resistance second, with warmth and looks close behind. Unlike a kitchen, standing water is a real possibility, so the bar is higher.
The best bathroom flooring options
Sheet vinyl is the most practical bathroom floor. It is fully waterproof, and because it comes in large pieces there are few or no seams for water to penetrate. Slip-resistant finishes add safety, and it is warm and soft underfoot.
LVT brings a more premium wood or stone look while staying water-resistant. Properly fitted with sealed joints, it performs well in family bathrooms and gives a higher-end finish than sheet vinyl.
Tile (porcelain or ceramic) is the traditional choice and the most waterproof of all when grouted and sealed correctly. Choose a slip-rated tile, and pair it with underfloor heating to counter the cold, hard feel.
What to avoid
Carpet and standard laminate are unsuitable — both absorb or swell with water. Solid wood is also a poor fit, as the humidity and splashes cause it to warp and cup over time.
The verdict
For most bathrooms, sheet vinyl gives the best waterproofing for the money, while LVT is the upgrade for looks. Tile is ideal where you want the most water resistance and have underfloor heating to keep it warm.
